Engineering BS Applicants

Applicants that hold a BS in an engineering discipline that is not Civil Engineering

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department requires that graduate degree-seeking students have the appropriate knowledge/background in subject areas related to the graduate study specialization they select. Specific courses to meet this objective are to be identified by the student’s academic adviser or program coordinator at the beginning of the graduate program. These courses must be taken as early as possible in the student’s program of graduate study and are to be taken for a letter grade.

As a minimum, preparation in the following two background areas must be satisfied by the applicants:
Water Resources, Hydrology, Hydraulics, and Related Graduate Programs
CIVE 300, Fluid Mechanics (3)
CIVE 322, Hydrology (3)

Structural Engineering, Solid Mechanics, and Related Graduate Programs
CIVE 360, Mechanics of Solids (3)
CIVE 367, Structural Engineering/ Structural Analysis (3)

Geotechnical, Geo-Environmental Engineering and Related Graduate Programs
CIVE 355, Geotechnical Engineering (3)
CIVE 360, Mechanics of Solids (3)

Environmental Engineering and Related Graduate Programs
CIVE 300, Fluid Mechanics
CIVE 339, Environmental Engineering Concepts (Spring semester)  OR CIVE 438, Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering (Fall semester)

CSU equivalent course is indicate above.

Students not satisfying the above requirement will be expected to take six or more credits in upper division (300-400 level) of Civil and Environmental Engineering courses. Generally, the required undergraduate courses should be most related to the intended program and/or used as prerequisites for the student’s graduate classes. The number of upper-division credits required varies with the graduate programs.

With the recommendation of the advisor and graduate committee, the student may petition the Department Chair for waiver of specific courses on the basis of extensive experience, completion of similar courses, or a professional engineering license.

A plan for completing the background courses is to be prepared by the student and their adviser, then submitted to the department for approval by the start of the registration period for the student’s second semester. Courses taken to fulfill these requirements must be taken for credit and a traditional grade. An overall background GPA of 3.0 must be maintained in background coursework.  The highest grade for any repeated background course will be counted towards background GPA requirements.
