Around 500 high school students and family members got a first-hand look at the latest designs in race cars, search and rescue robots, wireless metronomes, microwave radiometers and other exciting new projects at Colorado State's Engineering Exploration Day on Saturday, Feb. 10. Members of CSU's concrete canoe and steel bridge teams demonstrated their innovative civil engineering structures, while instructors gave tours of chemical and biological engineering and other laboratories.

Dean Sandra Woods and Associate Dean Tom Siller welcomed the eager and energetic potential undergraduates and their parents at 9:00 a.m. Current undergraduate students and faculty members were on hand to talk about engineering majors, potential careers, and the day-to-day life of a CSU student.

Participants learned about undergraduate life at Colorado State through tours and group discussions. "We hold this event every fall and spring to give high school students and their parents an inside look at the College of Engineering and provide a forum where they can ask questions of members of the faculty and current Colorado State students," said Dean Woods. "They were very interested in learning about on-campus residence halls, and particularly the Engineering Academic Village, a new living learning community opening in Fall 2007 that integrates classroom and experiential learning into the living area."

Aaron Benally, director of the Women and Minorities in Engineering Program, provided insights into the support systems available at Colorado State for underrepresented students. The financial aid session included information on financial aid and scholarships, as well as tutoring and advising services offered to Colorado State engineering students.
