Beyond the Classroom: Dr. Alciatore Engineers the Game of Pool

Dr. David Alciatore

When he can't be found around the engineering department, one might catch Dr. David Alciatore, better known as Dr. Dave, sinking another eight ball at the local billiards hall, bowling a perfect game or even challenging other faculty members to a friendly game of table tennis. Author of "The Illustrated Principles of Pool and Billiards," and monthly instructional columnist for "Billiards Digest Magazine," Dr. Alciatore has literally engineered the game of pool, as well as the art of bowling. As a means to both study and engineer the game, Dr. Alciatore has created an array of normal and high speed videos that capture the dynamics of pool; however, one can also find a plethora of other entertaining high speed clips on his website. Here, everything from a slow motion boxing punch to a soccer ball kick is documented on film.

Although he has taught at CSU for nearly 15 years, Dr. Alciatore has not always called Fort Collins his home. As a native of the New Orleans area, Dr. Alciatore's family has a rich history embedded in the city and a family owned French-Creole restaurant, Antoines, located near Bourbon Street. New Orleans is also the site of his undergraduate studies, and his record for the 5K at the University of New Orleans. Needless to say, he is still an avid runner.

Amazingly, in addition to teaching, conducting research, and writing publications, Dr. Alciatore has still found the time to play piano and the guitar, and even work on his historically designated home built in 1908. He also has remained active in the ASME, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, recently serving as the director of the Centennial Section. As well, Colorado State recently awarded him the Preston Davis Teaching Award in 2003, one of the University's highest academic honors. Despite his demanding schedule, Dr. Alciatore remains on the go with work in a wide range of activities, organizations and research. It will be interesting to see what game or hobby he will be engineering next!
