Student Competition Highlights

Twenty-two teams participated in the Human Powered Vehicle competition, held April 26 to 28 in Reno, Nevada. CSU entered one vehicle in the single rider class and one in the utility class, winning 1st Place for design in both the single rider and utility class events, 2nd Place overall in single rider competition, and 1st Place overall in the utility class.

The CSU student chapter took 1st Place overall at the ASCE Rocky Mountain Regional Conference held at Laramie, Wyoming. In addition to winning the overall competition, the students placed 1st in aesthetics and 2nd overall in the Steel Bridge contest (qualifying them for nationals), 1st in presentation and 2nd overall in the Concrete Canoe competition, and 1st in the non-technical paper (qualifying Eric Broughton to go to nationals).

Atmospheric science graduate student Katherine Straub received the award for Best Student Paper at the 13th AMS Conference on Atmosphere and Oceanic Fluid Dynamics.

The College of Engineering again joined with alumni volunteers to recognize the outstanding senior volunteer to the university and/or the community. The Laureate Award winner for 2002 was Ryan Avery. This award is co-sponsored by members of the College of Engineering Development Board. Joining the faculty in selecting this year’s award winner were Ron Blatchley of Blatchley Associates, Dave Stewart of Stewart Environmental Consultants, and Darell Zimbelman of the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District.
