Colorado Space Grant Program Announces Available Research Funding

The Colorado State University component of the NASA Space Grant Program has announced that it is accepting proposals for space-related research funding. Members of the University community may submit proposals for undergraduate summer internships and research seed grants until April 1, 2005. Awards will be announced by April 15, 2005.

UNDERGRADUATE SUMMER INTERNSHIPS

The students chosen for support should (1) be strong in the appropriate academic areas, (2) have a strong interest in space projects and programs, and (3) be matched with a faculty member and specific project so it can be assured that the student has a defined task and a mentor. The space-related summer project on which the student would work could be a part of a sponsored project or some topic of high interest to both the student and the faculty member.

These Summer Undergraduate Internships may be for an amount up to $4000 for a full summer (10-week minimum) student effort. Stipends for shorter periods of time will be a rate of $400/week. This program supports student stipends (in the form of student hourly pay), and normally not other project costs.

Proposals two pages or less in length may be submitted either by interested students or by a faculty member nominating a student. It should contain information on the work to be done, the associated benefit to the student and the "sponsoring" faculty member, the academic record of the student, and a statement of agreement signed by both the student and the faculty member. A cover page containing a title, the funding requested, faculty and student names, mail and e-mail addresses and telephone numbers should be attached to each proposal.

It is anticipated that eight Summer Undergraduate Internships will be awarded.

RESEARCH SEED GRANTS

This program offers grants of up to $8,500 for original research related to space that holds substantial promise for subsequent funding from an external source and for graduate degree production. Proposals will be evaluated on the bases of 1) innovation and technical merit, 2) capability and resources of the investigator and 3) viability and schedule for submitting one or more subsequent full proposals to identified funding sources. Preference will be given to proposals submitted by junior faculty and staff that budget monies primarily for supplies and student support. Funding is planned over a six-month interval beginning no sooner than May 20, 2005 and ending no later than December 31, 2005.

Proposals not more than 5 pages in length must be preceded by a cover page containing a title, funding requested, the name, mail and e-mail addresses and telephone number of the principal investigator (PI). This page must be signed by the PI and his or her department head. By so doing, both signers are considered to state that they intend to submit full proposals to identified funding sources. The body of the proposal should define an objective, approach, budget and relevant resources. It should also give a brief resume of the PI and a schedule for submission of full proposals and identify any funding either in place or pending on topics that are the same or similar.

It is anticipated that two Research Seed Grants will be awarded.

Proposals for both announcements should be delivered by April 1, 2005 to:
