Biochemical Engineer James McMillan to Speak at Fall Commencement

The College of Engineering welcomes Senior Biochemical Engineer James (Jim) McMillan as the Fall 2003 Commencement speaker. McMillan earned his bachelor's degree from Colorado State University in chemical engineering in 1982 and will speak on Saturday, December 20, 2003, at 4:00 p.m. in the Lory Student Center Main Ballroom.

McMillan is a senior biochemical engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colo., where he leads bioprocess research and development on fuel and chemical production from abundant, inexpensive

lignocellulosic biomass materials including agricultural and forestry residues and cellulosic industrial wastes. During his 13+ years at NREL, Jim has investigated various aspects of biologically-based biomass conversion, including pretreatment, hydrolyzate conditioning, pentose and mixed sugar fermentation, cellulase enzyme production, simultaneous and separate enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation, and integrated processing. Through this and related work, he is helping to develop the tools, knowledge base and processing strategies that will enable lignocellulose-based biorefineries to become a commercial reality in the coming decades.

Jim obtained a Ph.D. in biochemical engineering and an M.S. in chemical engineering practice from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned a B.S. in chemical engineering with high distinction from Colorado State University. He is the co-inventor on two patents, co-editor of 3 volumes, and author or co-author of 6 book chapters and over 60 papers, reports and technical presentations. A current reviewer for numerous journals and funding agencies, Jim previously served on the editorial board of the World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology. Active in organizing technical sessions at professional meetings, Jim is on the organizing committee for the annual Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals and a co-editor of the symposia's peer-reviewed published proceedings. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). He was recently elected a director of AIChE's Food, Pharmaceutical and Bioengineering Division (Division 15). Jim also serves as the chair for a new AIChE topical conference, "Envisioning Biorefineries - Chemicals and Materials from Renewable Resources," which is now entering its third year.

Jim is a co-investigator on several collaborative research projects and proposals related to biomass processing. He serves on numerous doctoral students' thesis committees, and in this capacity he is currently an adjunct (aka affiliate or ad honorem) member of the chemical engineering faculties at Colorado State University, the University of Colorado and the University of Puerto Rico. Jim is an active member of the advisory boards of Colorado State University's College of Engineering and Department of Chemical Engineering.
