Winners of the Distinguished Administrative Professional awards this year are Christine Bern, Center for the Environmental Management of Military Lands; Cindy Carrick and Paul DeMott, Department of Atmospheric Science; and Russell Scott, College of Natural Resources.

The winners will be recognized at the Distinguished Awards Ceremony at 3 p.m. Nov. 20 in the North Ballroom of the Lory Student Center. A reception follows at 4 p.m. in the LSC Cherokee Park Room. The ceremony also will honor winners of the Pennock Distinguished Service Awards and Outstanding Achievement Awards.

Christine Bern

As an alumna, dedicated member of the Administrative Professional Council and research associate at the Center for the Environmental Management of Military Lands, Chris Bern has embodied the ideals of professionalism, scholarship and service. Her versatility, broad knowledge and significant contributions to natural resource monitoring projects for CEMML have made her an invaluable member of the team. Over the course of her career, Bern also has made significant contributions in teaching and outreach.

"She genuinely cares about people, their problems, their concerns, their lands and their future," said a program manager for the Idaho Army National Guard. "This true concern shows in every aspect of her work. Also, she has an outrageous sense of humor that makes each project an adventure."

Cindy Carrick

Cindy Carrick, who is called a "supremely capable research coordinator" by a professor in the atmospheric science department, is responsible for preparing proposals, hiring research staff, making travel arrangements, allocating salary, purchasing, journal manuscript processing, supervising staff, designing software tools, interacting with graduate research assistants and many other duties. "She is smart, imaginative, hard-working and fearless," the professor noted. In addition to her job responsibilities, she is active in service projects such as School is Cool and contributes to several community public education programs.

A colleague said, " Although she is extremely busy, she has never been too busy to help me when I needed her. She has also been enthusiastic and proactive in meeting the challenges of these changing times."

Paul DeMott

As a senior research scientist in the Department of Atmospheric Science, Paul DeMott leads a world-class research program in studies of cloud physics and is a well known authority on atmospheric aerosols. He is responsible for all aspects of funded research, from submitting proposals to publishing research results. "Paul has not only built a stellar and renowned reputation among the world's atmospheric scientists, he has contributed much back to the scientific community and to CSU," a Colorado State professor said.

His unique research has had a profound impact on the scientific world, and his tenure on several international committees and his work as a reviewer for an array of journals demonstrate the high regard of the national and international communities.

A research scientist in Switzerland noted, "I have always highly appreciated discussions with Paul not only because of his scientific expertise and critical judgment, but also because he is an honest individual who is very enjoyable to talk to...He is truly a huge asset to Colorado State University, and he has placed CSU on my personal map of atmospheric science institutions."

Russell Scott

Russell Scott, director of information technology for the College of Natural Resources, has worked to create one of the most advanced instructional and information technology resources on campus. Noted for his dedication to the college, his peers and to the university, Scott's vision has helped produce cutting-edge systems and support mechanisms that span a wide range of computer applications.

"He has developed an open environment of trust and cooperation, encouraging each of us to experiment with new technologies and develop creative solutions to complex problems," a nominator said. "Although buried under a busy schedule, he is dedicated to not only his work, but his family and each of his team members."

The dean of the college noted, "The level of his accomplishment speaks to Rusty's ability to move beyond vision to implementation. He effectively manages budgets and personnel to accomplish a very ambitions agenda with limited resources. He has been critical to the success of our teaching, research and outreach programs."
