Colorado State Atmospheric Science Researcher Nolan Doesken Describes Cocorahs on KUNC

Atmospheric science research associate Nolan Doesken recently spoke with KUNC announcer Jim Williams about his work with CoCoRaHS, the Community Collaborative Rain and Hail Study program he helped launch after the 1997 July flooding that devastated parts of the Front Range. The CoCoRaHS program is designed to accurately measure rain, hail and snowfall in Colorado and relies on the help of volunteer weather watchers to report precipitation in their area.

In the broadcast, Doesken explains why CoCoRaHS volunteers are necessary in recording storm variations and how the information the volunteers provide can be used to analyze precipitation patterns and improve radar estimates of rainfall and radar detection of hail and hail swaths. Williams accompanies Doesken as he documents volunteers' measurements and recounts the success of the program so far.
