Over 1,000 Students Visit Engineering Career Fair

Recruiters talking with students at Career Fair

The College of Engineering hosted its Spring Career & Internship Fair February 13 and 14 when 150 companies packed into the West Ballroom of the Lory Student Center. Over 1,000 Colorado State engineering students made first contact and chatted with prospective employers across all career fields. The Fair offers a great opportunity for students to see what career choices that companies offer and what sort of coursework and research they require, but it's also a time for students to interview the companies.

“This is a time where I can find out who I want to work for,” said senior Environmental Engineering major Amy Jones. “I want to know what their values are, and I want to know how they present themselves as a company here.” Jones is just one of the many engineering students who came to the career fair in hopes of landing a job right after graduation.

While mostly juniors and seniors attend the career fair, freshman and sophomore engineering students are encouraged to see what possible careers are out there when the time comes to apply. Many of the employers at the event said that internship experience and a strong resume are key factors that are taken into consideration for potential employees, but being friendly and outgoing doesn't hurt either. “Just be yourself and be very personal and don't hold anything back, and if you show your employers your personality and how you can be a little bit different from somebody else, you're going to go a long way,” recruiter and Colorado State University alumnus Andy Gingerich said.

John Haines, career liaison for the College of Engineering, summarized this year's event. “We were extremely pleased at the growth of our Fair this year. We were very excited to welcome many new companies to campus for the first time, as well as to welcome back many of our long-standing industry partners.

“As uncertainty in the economy increases, the success of our fair demonstrates the strength of the engineering profession as an integral part of Colorado's new energy economy,” said Haines. “The innovation, creativity and work ethic of CSU engineering graduates will supply Colorado companies with future leaders in the engineering industry. We're fortunate to have a great Fair that provides employers and students a convenient forum in which to connect. We're optimistic about the continued growth and success of the Engineering Career and Internship Fair, and the future of our graduates.”
