Thin Clients in the Academic Village

You’ll find over 50 sleek, quiet, reliable thin clients in place of bulky PCs in the Academic Village. In fact, thin clients are used throughout the College of Engineering: In the college computer labs, administrative staff offices, and even some faculty offices. These thin clients connect to Windows servers and provide access to all your Engineering software.

Your Academic Village Program Charge for Service entitles you to have one thin client in your room. The thin client comes with a 23″ widescreen monitor, keyboard and mouse. Using this, you can connect to a Windows session which you can then connect to on any other thin client in the Academic Village AND the Engineering college’s many computer labs! It’s like carrying a laptop around with you, except without the actual laptop.

How do I get my own thin client?

If you would like your thin client for your Academic Village room (Engineering Hall only), please click here to request one. ETS will then schedule with you to set up the thin client in your room.

Please note: At the end of the year, you will need to return all of the thin client equipment with its original packaging to ETS. You will be responsible for replacing the equipment if it is broken, stolen, or lost.

What does the thin client come with?

The thin client package comes with the thin client, power supply and power cable, 23″ monitor with video and power cable, keyboard, mouse, and ethernet cable.

How do I set up my thin client?

You don’t have to. One of the ETS technicians will set it up for you. We will schedule with you to set it up in your room.

I like my thin client, but I don't like this monitor / keyboard / mouse.

That’s fine; you can actually use any USB keyboard or mouse with the client. You can also use any monitor that has an HDMI input. You can even use a second monitor if you like. You are responsible for all items until you leave the Academic Village. ETS will not accept partial setups for storage.

How do I return my thin client at the end of the school year?

ETS will have regular hours posted at the AV ETS Help Desk, or you may return your equipment to the ETS Main Help Desk (see above). Please be sure to return all equipment to ETS before the last day of the school year! It is very important that you do this, or your student account may be charged for the equipment.

ETS will test the thin client equipment when you return it to us. If the equipment is nonfunctional when it is returned to ETS, your student account may be charged the cost of replacing the equipment.

What if I move out of Academic Village before the school year ends?

Regardless of the reason you are moving out of AV, you are responsible for contacting ETS to set up a time to return all the thin client equipment. ETS does not have access to student’s rooms, so we are unable to retrieve the equipment under your name once you leave. Until you turn it in, you are still responsible for all thin client equipment you have rented out, even if you are no longer on campus or part of the College of Engineering. You will still be financially responsible for all equipment not turned in at the end of the school year.

Thin clients are allowed for the use of students staying in the AV dorms only. If you move to a different dorm during your time at CSU you will need to return the equipment to ETS.

What happens if the thin client or monitor breaks?

If the equipment breaks or doesn’t work properly, please notify ETS immediately. If we determine that the equipment broke through no fault of yours, we will replace it and there will be no charge to you. If you spill a soda on it, or throw it across the room in frustration, or any other deliberate or irresponsible act, your student account will be charged the cost of replacing the equipment.

ETS will test the thin client equipment when you return it to us. If the equipment is nonfunctional when it is returned to ETS, your student account may be charged the cost of replacing the equipment.

How do I connect to the Engineering Labs on the thin client?

Log in using your Engineering user name and password, just as if you were logging into a computer in the college computer labs. This is literally the only thing you should do with the thin client; its sole purpose is to connect you to the Virtual Classroom.

Troubleshooting

My thin client doesn't work at all!

  • Does the thin client have power? Turn on the thin client by pressing the power button on the front of the unit. It will light up blue if it is receiving power.
  • Is any image displayed on the monitor? Make sure you have connected the video cable to the thin client and the monitor.
  • Make sure you have plugged the ethernet cable into the yellow ethernet jack on the wall.

Restarting the thin client

Just like most electronic or computer devices, many problems are solved by restarting the device. To restart the thin client, press the power button on the front of the thin client to shut it off. Press the power button again to turn it on.

Error: Remote Desktop connection cannot find the computer "virtualclassroom.engr.colostate.edu" ...

If you log in and receive this error, then one of two things is wrong: The ethernet cable is disconnected, or your ethernet wall port is not working. Make sure you have plugged the ethernet cable into the yellow ethernet jack on the wall.
