Homework #5

Questions:

The following refer to the book Introduction to Chemical Engineering: Tools for Today and Tomorrow (5th Edition).

  1. Reading Question 1 from Chapter 10 on page 185

  2. Homework Problem 5 from Chapter 10 on page 186

  3. Homework Problem 7 from Chapter 10 on page 186

Do this problem first ‘by hand’. Then, write a function with the following signature:

    function [conv_hot, cond, conv_cool] = calc_resistances(ri, ro)

    where

    • conv_hot is the fraction of the total resistance attributable to convective heat transfer resistance for the hot fluid

    • cond is the fraction of the total resistance attributable to conductive heat transfer resistance in the tube wall

    • conv_cold is the fraction of the total resistance attributable to convective heat transfer resistance for the cold fluid

    • ri is the inner tube diameter

    • ro is the outer tube diameter

Test your function with your answer from the ‘by hand’ analysis.

  4. Consider the manufacture of xylenes case study beginning on page 221.

    Find the following:

    1. the rate \((\si{lb_{m}/hr})\) at which saturated steam must be supplied to the first heat exchanger

    2. the rate \((\si{lb_{m}/hr})\) at which saturated steam must be supplied to the jacket around the reactor to maintain the reactor contents at constant temperature.
