Homework #5¶
Questions:
The following refer to the book Introduction to Chemical Engineering: Tools for Today and Tomorrow (5th Edition).
Reading Question 1 from Chapter 10 on page 185
Homework Problem 5 from Chapter 10 on page 186
Homework Problem 7 from Chapter 10 on page 186
Do this problem first ‘by hand’. Then, write a function with the following signature:
function [conv_hot, cond, conv_cool] = calc_resistances(ri, ro)
where
conv_hot
is the fraction of the total resistance attributable to convective heat transfer resistance for the hot fluidcond
is the fraction of the total resistance attributable to conductive heat transfer resistance in the tube wallconv_cold
is the fraction of the total resistance attributable to convective heat transfer resistance for the cold fluidri
is the inner tube diameterro
is the outer tube diameter
Test your function with your answer from the ‘by hand’ analysis.
Consider the manufacture of xylenes case study beginning on page 221.
Find the following:
the rate \((\si{lb_{m}/hr})\) at which saturated steam must be supplied to the first heat exchanger
the rate \((\si{lb_{m}/hr})\) at which saturated steam must be supplied to the jacket around the reactor to maintain the reactor contents at constant temperature.
Review your responses to all of the homework questions before class so that you are prepared for the quiz on Tuesday!
