Homework Guidelines

As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.

—Albert Einstein

All homework assignments are due right after the quiz on the due date.

Late assignments will not be accepted.

Students are encouraged to work together on assignments, but copying homework is not acceptable.

If you do work with others, clearly indicate their names on your assignment. In this case each student must submit their own work.

Assignments submitted with multiple students’ names will not be graded unless the assignment is a group assignment (e.g. group laboratory assignments).

Copies of submitted homework should conform to the following format:

  • Use 8 1/2” x 11” paper.

  • If multiple sheets are required, the pages must be stapled in the upper left-hand corner. Paper should not have fringes (e.g. torn from a spiral notebook), origami in the corner, or be fastened with anything other than a staple.

  • For MATLAB components, attach a printout of the code used to generate the results and any plots and tables that are specified in the problem statement.

  • Hand-written solutions should be neat and legible. Problem solutions should show all of the work.

  • It is not acceptable to submit just a final answer.

  • The work should be presented in a logical order that can be easily followed as someone reads the page. This may require rewriting your solution after you have found the final answer, to clarify your logic.

  • It is not necessary or desirable to copy the problem statement onto your homework solution.

  • Clearly label, circle, or underline, the final answer.

  • Remember that most quantities have units. These units should always be included, both in the solution and the final answer.

  • Cite all sources, including electronic sources (e.g. websites, e-books) and people (classmates, graders, etc.) when you receive assistance or work with others.

Homework submitted that does not conform to these formatting requirements may not receive credit.
