Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Dr. Timothy M. Hansen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Colorado State University (CSU), where he has served since Fall 2025. He is also affiliated with the CSU Energy Institute, where his research advances resilient electric power and energy systems through applications of machine learning, optimization, and high-performance computing. He earned his B.S. in Computer Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 2011 and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Colorado State University in 2015. Prior to rejoining CSU, Dr. Hansen held the Harold C. Hohbach Endowed Associate Professorship in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at South Dakota State University. During his doctoral studies, he also served as a graduate researcher in the Distributed Energy Systems Integration group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO.
Dr. Hansen’s work addresses challenges at the intersection of power system operations and electricity markets, with a particular emphasis on integrating distributed energy resources, inverter-based generation, and stochastic renewable supply. His recent research includes weather-informed grid operations, market participation of distributed energy resources, and cyber-physical-social modeling for demand response. Dr. Hansen is a Senior Member of the IEEE and serves on the IEEE Power and Energy Education Committee, where he has held multiple leadership roles. He is the recipient of the 2019 IEEE HKN Outstanding Teaching Award and the 2020 MSOE Graduate of the Last Decade Award. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and industry partners.
