Tong research on innovative desalination process featured on cover of Nature Water journal

The cover of the June 2023 edition of Nature Water features research by Associate Professor Tiezheng Tong and PhD student Yiqun Yao entitled “Electrodialytic crystallization to enable zero liquid discharge.” Wastewater with high salinity has typically required the use of evaporation or freezing to crystalize the salt thereby removing it from the water, but the process uses a significant amount of energy. This collaboration with researchers from Vanderbilt University resulted in a proof of concept for an alternative process namely electrodialytic crystallization (EDC) to be used to achieve non-evaporative zero liquid discharge – effectively, no water being wasted in the process, reducing the environmental impact and increasing the output of reusable water for sustainable wastewater treatment and recycling.
