B.S. - M.S. Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP)

Students with strong scholarly and/or research interests may apply for admission to a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program to complete some graduate program requirements during their senior year of undergraduate study. AMP accelerates students’ time-to-degree for the Master of Science (M.S.) in Mechanical Engineering program by allowing them to conduct some research toward their master’s thesis and double count some 500-level courses while still an undergraduate student. 

Students who are eligible for the Accelerated Master’s Program can also apply to be accepted into MECH 498: Research Practicum in lieu of senior design. This plan allows for flexibility in the scheduling and completion of upper-division undergraduate requirements while concurrently fulfilling graduate course requirements for the master’s degree. However, enrollment in MECH 498 is not a requirement of AMP. Students may still take MECH 486 Senior Design if desired.

Students who are accepted into this program are allowed to double count up to 9 credits of 500-level coursework in both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. Please see the “Accelerated Master’s Degree Program” section of Graduate and Professional Bulletin for detailed information.

To apply, students must be enrolled in the bachelor’s degree program in mechanical engineering and have:

  • Cumulative STEM GPA of 3.25 or above
  • Concurrent registration in MECH 486A or MECH 498A
  • A commitment from a mechanical engineering faculty member to serve as their graduate advisor
  • Students must maintain at least a 3.25 GPA to remain in the program.

These requirements are firm. No exceptions are allowed.

Advanced Placement

During the senior year of undergraduate study in mechanical engineering, Accelerated Master’s Program students may take up to 9 credits of graduate-level courses that can count toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. For courses to count towards both the undergraduate and graduate degrees, they must be:

  • Regular credit courses
  • 500-level
  • Passed with a grade of B or better

The B.S. degree will be awarded upon completion of all undergraduate requirements and the M.S. degree will be awarded upon completion of all graduate requirements. 

Application and Deadlines

Students interested in AMP must meet with the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program Specialist by September 1 of the fall semester for spring graduates or February 1 of the spring semester for fall graduates during their senior year to ensure that they understand program admission requirements.

During their final semester of undergraduate study, students must complete a formal application to the Graduate School by February 15 for Fall Admission and September 15 for Spring Admission. See the ME Graduate Program Application Guide for more information about this step.

  • Professional Resume or Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement of Purpose 
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation – one of which must come from the faculty graduate advisor
  • Official Original Transcripts (CSU transcripts are automatically added to your application)
  • Answers to program questions in the online application

Junior Year

  • Schedule meetings with potential faculty research advisors for AMP
  • Work in the research group of the faculty research advisor to learn more about the research and if it is a fit for your AMP degree
  • Fill out the AMP Interest Form below

Senior Year (after admission to the AMP program)

  • No later than September 1 for spring graduates or February 1 for fall graduates: meet with the MECH Graduate Programs Specialist to discuss AMP and to review program requirements
  • Fall and spring semesters: Take up to nine credits of 500-level MECH courses
  • February 15 for spring graduates and September 15 for fall graduates: Apply to the MECH MS graduate program via the Graduate School standard application process
  • April for spring graduates and November for fall graduates: Complete the GS4 form via RamWeb
