Ph.D. candidate Michael Talbot has received the 2024-25 Colorado Association of Stormwater and Floodplain Managers (CASFM) Ben Urbonas Scholarship. Talbot researches the intersection of hydrologic modeling, climate science, machine learning, and data science. He uses explainable AI to better understand the ability of deep learning models (i.e., long short-term memory neural networks) in regional hydrologic prediction, and how to improve predicting streamflow during drought and flood events.
“My hope is that my research can better our understanding of the factors leading to major floods and help us predict them in time for communities to prepare,” said Talbot.
“I’m honored to receive this award, and I look forward to attending the CASFM Annual Conference this fall.”
