Dr. Chien-Yung Tseng

Assistant Professor in Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering

Headshot of Chein-Yung Tseng

Dr. Chien-Yung Tseng joined the CEE Department in February 2024 after serving as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Environmental Sciences Division. His research and expertise mainly focus on fundamental fluid mechanics and turbulent mixing in environmental flows such as rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal regions, as well as the corresponding ecosystem impacts and hydraulic engineering applications, including ecosystem-environmental flow interactions and hydropower/hydrokinetic renewable energy. Through his research, Dr. Tseng aims to gain a comprehensive understanding and integration of complex, nonlinear physical mechanisms, thereby contributing to the development of improved restoration and efficient engineering designs under various flow scenarios. He has consistently published research articles in high-impact journals such as Water Resources Research, Geophysical Research Letters, Advances in Water Resources, and Ocean Modelling.

Dr. Tseng earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from National Tsing Hua University and Master’s degree in Applied Mechanics (Fluid Mechanics) from National Taiwan University, both in Taiwan. He obtained his Ph.D. in Water Resources Engineering and Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His doctoral work involved investigating the interfacial transfer process, turbulent mixing, and sediment dynamics in vegetated river flows using multi-scale laboratory experiments and state-of-the-art flow image/video measurement techniques. In recognition of his outstanding research contributions, he was awarded the Best Young Professional Award at The 9th International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics organized by the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR).
