Director, Grid Modernization Initiative, Energy Institute
Dr. Zongjie Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Systems Engineering at Colorado State University (CSU). She also serves as the Director of the Grid Modernization Initiative at the Energy Institute. Dr. Wang is recognized for her expertise in optimizing hybrid transmission and distribution operations, as well as her impactful contributions to distributed energy resource modeling, grid resilience, and market dynamic integration. As the lead principal investigator on multiple projects funded by the Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, Eversource Energy, national labs, ISO New England, and MISO, her work aims to enhance power grid reliability and resilience.
Before joining CSU, Dr. Wang was an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut, where she also served as Associate Director of the Eversource Energy Center. In this role, she led initiatives related to grid modernization, workforce development, and industrial educational training. Previously, Dr. Wang held positions as a postdoctoral research associate and a lecturer in Systems Engineering at Cornell University. Additionally, Dr. Wang spent over six months collaborating with the Ministry of Energy in Accra, Ghana, where she focused on improving power quality and grid infrastructure planning. During her PhD program at Harbin Institute of Technology, Dr. Wang conducted joint research training as non-degree student at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.
Dr. Wang is the recipient of the Rising Star Award from the Connecticut Power and Energy Society and the Women of Innovation Award for Research Innovation & Leadership from the Connecticut Technology Council, a highly competitive, state-level honor recognizing exceptional achievements across all STEM fields by the Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal and Governor Ned Lamont.
Dr. Wang is the General Chair of the 57th North American Power Symposium (NAPS) in 2025. She is an editor at Scientific Reports, a Nature Portfolio journal, and actively contributes to IEEE as a senior member, Vice Chair for the IEEE PEEC Award Subcommittee, Secretary-elect for IEEE PEEC Research Subcommittee, members of the IEEE PEEC Steering Committee and multiple IEEE PES subcommittees.
Since 2021, Dr. Wang has successfully led multi-million-dollar projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, independent system operators (ISOs), national laboratories, industry partners, and utilities. Dr. Wang’s collaborative engagements extend widely to utility companies, software vendors, independent system operators, national labs, and academic institutions.
