Producing High Peak-Current, Cold Bunches For Optimal XFEL Operation
Abstract: The presented work focuses on compression schemes for x-ray free-electron lasers(XFEL). A background on free-electron lasers and accelerator requirements is presented, with an emphasis on achieving the necessary electron bunch parameters for XFEL operations. Discussion of the trade offs between traditional electron bunch compressors and novel compression techniques employing laser-electron beam coupling will be presented, along with simulation results for the enhanced current spontaneous emission(ESASE) and a phase enhanced harmonic generation(PEHG)-like compression scheme.
