A Low-Cost Reconfigurable Electrochemical Analyzer for Mobile Point-of-Care Applications

Abstract: As technology evolved in recent
years, bioelectronics have played an
increasingly important role developed
in supporting and assisting daily life of
ordinary people. Bioelectronics have,
therefore, become an emerging topic
that draws more attention lately.
Traditional approaches for bioanalytic
detections involves DNA-based
polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
method, fluoresce labeling and other
laborious assay preparation steps,
which requires well trained personnels
to operate and thus makes it
unsuitable as a platform for point-of-
care (POC) purpose due to the cost
and usual practicality. Among varies
detection principles, electrochemical
detection stands out due to its
simplicity and high sensitivity.
However, the typical lab grade
instruments are bulky and expensive.
This work presents a portable
electrochemical analyzer for point-of-
care diagnostic applications. The
platform uses the electrochemical
approaches such as electrochemical
impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic
voltametry (CV), etc., for the detection
of various kind of analyte, such as
DNA, protein, virus,
neurotransmitter,cortisol and so on.
The proposed full design includes
sensing front end towards user’s
phone app. This analyzer has been
validated by redox couple chemical
and modeled dummy cells with a
measurement error around 2.6%. The
integrated circuit board area is lesser
than 29cm^2 at a low cost.
