mmWave Massive MIMO（M-mMIMO): How to Harness More with Less?
Abstract: The increasingly congested spectrum in the current cellular band, along with the explosive growth of bandwidth hungry applications, is driving us towards the vast mmWave spectrum ranging from 30 to 300 GHz. The physically abundant frequency resources, accompanied by the intrinsic compatibility with massive MIMO (mMIMO), have rendered mmWave a promising technology for the upcoming 5G era. As a key physical layer solution, mmWave mMIMO has therefore been gaining remarkable attention from both the industry and academia.
The topic of this preliminary presentation will focus on the design and optimization of mmWave mMIMO transceivers with a hybrid structure. Under the guidance of harnessing more with less in mmWave mMIMO, this work will entail an innovative DSDS channel estimator for doubly-selective channels and a novel generalized beamspace modulation (GBM) for multiplexing-gain restricted system. The major contributions can be summarized as follows:
• The 1st mmWave mMIMO channel estimator that is capable of estimating wideband frequency-selective and time-varying mmWave mMIMO channels with orders of magnitude accuracy improvement but much lowered complexity;
• The 1st mmWave mMIMO generalized beamspace modulation in which the multiplexing gain is no longer limited by the number of transmitter RF chains.
The research outcomes to be presented will significantly advance the state-of-the-art and improve the readiness of hybrid mmWave mMIMO deployment.
