Numerical Simulation of a
Continuous Rolling Mill

This research involves the development of an efficient computer code for the thermal/mechanical analysis of a 26 stand rolling mill. As a rod passes through the stands, it sequentially changes cross-sectional shape from round to elliptical and back to round, etc. - each time reducing its size. The deformations taking place as the rod passes through a stand are assumed to be visco-plastic. The thermal analysis must include the heat generated by the plastic deformations, the heat transfer to the rolls, the radiation and convective heat transfer to the atmosphere between rolls, including water baths.
