Rocket Team

History of the Team

Founded in 2014 by Dr. Marchese, the CSU IREC team started as a group of only four students. Instead of focusing on winning the competition outright, these students chose to focus on innovation and technical development and flew their Aries I rocket at the competition in 2015 to great acclaim for a small, first-year team. The ’15-’16 Aries II team, another small team of only 4 students, would take over and continue the tradition of innovation. Last year’s Aries III Team, a team of 13 students, was the first team to be co-advised by Dr. Guzik. It was also the first year to include three major innovations: Liquid fueled rocket, honeycomb composite airframe, and active flight controls. Aries III was the first liquid fueled rocket to ever successfully launch in the history of the Inter-Collegiate Rocket Competition. This year’s Aries IV team is 14 students strong and is focusing on refining the liquid fueled motor, advancing the aerodynamic design of the rocket, continuing the use of the innovative honeycomb/fiberglass composite, developing an interesting experimental payload, and successfully implementing active flight controls.
