CSU Department of Mechanical Engineering Welcomes Five New Faculty

Mohammad Abutayeh

Assistant Professor of Practice

Mohammad Abutayeh is an assistant professor of practice in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Abutayeh earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Florida. 

Before joining the CSU Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Abutayeh was an assistant professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Arkansas State, where he taught courses in energy conversion, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, sustainable energy, and thermodynamics. Dr. Abutayeh also conducts research related to the application of renewable energy.

Wajid Chishty

Professor of Practice

Wajid Chishty is an professor of practice in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Chishty earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. 

Dr. Chishty has over 30 years of industrial, research, technology development, and teaching experience. Prior to joining the CSU Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Chishty served as program director for the National Research Council of Canada where he established the Integrated Autonomous Mobility Program, which focuses on enabling the safe integration unmanned aircraft systems into Canada’s airspace.

Douglas Fankell

Assistant Professor of Practice

Douglas Fankell is an assistant professor of practice in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Fankell earned his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering with a Mechanics of Materials focus from the University of Colorado—Boulder. 

Before joining the CSU Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Fankell worked at RUAG Space as an aerospace stress engineer and task manager and the University of Colorado – Boulder as an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Karen Thorsett-Hill

Associate Professor of Practice

Karen Thorsett-Hill is an associate professor of practice in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Thorsett-Hill earned her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Carolina—Charlotte. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., Dr. Thorsett-Hill spent 20 years in engineering project management and engineering design in both the U.S. Navy and private industry.

Before joining the CSU Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Thorsett-Hill was an associate teaching professor in the William States Lee College of Engineering at the University of North Carolina—Charlotte, where she founded and mentored the nationally acclaimed NASA USLI Rocketry Team and Club and the student chapter of AIAA. Dr. Thorsett-Hill also teaches summer courses in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and solid mechanics at the University of Colorado—Boulder.

Dan Wise

Professor of Practice

Dan Wise is a professor of practice in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and retired United States Navy captain. Dr. Wise earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University. 

Before joining the CSU Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Wise was the director of federal marine programs for the Siemens Corporation. Dr. Wise served as an engineering duty officer in the United States Navy for over 25 years.
