Since the course is intended to serve students who have already taken Statics, basic skills in geometry and equilibrium analysis based on balance of force and moment are expected. Topics covered include simple loading situation such as axial tensile, simple shearing, compression, torsion, and bending as well as additional methods to solve simple statically indeterminate problems and combined loading situations such as off-centered axial loading, and the transformation of stress.<\/p>\n<h1>Course Objective<\/h1>\n<p>Students will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify mechanical properties and the characteristics of elastic behavior for basic types of material<\/li>\n<li>Calculate the engineering stress and strain at a point for a specific simple loading arrangement<\/li>\n<li>Transform plane stress and strain configurations and identify principal stress and principal axes<\/li>\n<li>Use the appropriate failure criteria for simple situations and\/or materials (within elastic limit only)<\/li>\n<li>Design prismatic beams for handling simple loading conditions<\/li>\n<li>Determine the deflection at any point of a prismatic beam, given the simple loading and end (boundary) condition<\/li>\n<li>Determine the load, shear and moment diagrams for a beam given the loading and end conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Course Syllabus\u00a0&amp;
