Dr. Howard A. Perko

Biosketch

Dr. Perko has been an affiliate faculty at Colorado State University on a part-time basis for 11 years. His teaching experience includes concrete and materials laboratory, statics, and solid mechanics. He currently co-teaches CIVE574 Project Management with Mark Abshire every Fall Semester. In the past, he has served CSU as research professor and principal investigator on NASA funded projects involving Mars landslides, Lunar soil mechanics, and Comet dust mantel surface properties. He currently serves as a collaborator on NASA Data Analysis proposals with Washington State University and is occasionally called upon to serve as a NASA Specialist Reviewer for the Discovery Program in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Perko has B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering and 20+ years of professional engineering experience specializing in the design of shallow and deep foundations, earth dams, dewatering, excavation shoring, and underpinning. Dr. Perko currently serves on the Board of Directors for Magnum Piering, Inc. In his present role, he directs new product design and development and advises management in technical sales, marketing, support, and engineering. Magnum Piering, Inc. is a manufacturer of specialty foundation and anchoring devices including jacked piles, helical piles, plate anchors, wall braces, solar panel piers, and foundations for the oil and gas industry.

• Author of over 35 technical publications on topics including earth anchors, shoring, helical piles, full displacement piles, soil shear strength, underground corrosion, deep foundations, and expansive soils
• Author of changes to the 2009 International Building Code to include helical piles
• Lead consultant in preparation of ICC-ES document AC358, Acceptance Criteria for Helical Foundation Systems and Devices.
• Assisted Mueser Rutledge with New York City Building Department bulletin on helical pile foundations
• Nine patents for foundation technology
