Professor José Chávez has received the Best Paper Award 2025 from the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) for his paper titled “Assessing multi-sensor hourly maize evapotranspiration estimation using a one-source surface energy balance approach.” The paper is co-authored by CEE Ph.D. alum Edson Costa-Filho and Huihui Zhang.

“Receiving the ICID Journal – Irrigation and Drainage ‘Best Paper Award 2025’ is a great honor for us,” said Chávez. “We have been investigating different remote sensing technologies and their effects on remote sensing of actual crop evapotranspiration (ETa) algorithms in order to identify the best combinations of remote sensing data sources and ETa algorithms to improve irrigation water management. Therefore, it is very gratifying to learn that a well-respected institution as is the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) finds our study/paper very relevant and innovative.”

“The multi-year study and resulting journal articles are the result of a team effort. Thus, we want to sincerely thank the following supporting institutions and individuals that in one way or another were involved in the study: the Irrigation Innovation Consortium (IIC), Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District (Northern Water) and the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES)—USDA NIFA project COL00796, Cole Lucero, Rustin Jensen, Mia Morones, Kelsey Walker, Jon Altenhofen, Katie Ascough, Brianna Trotter, Alex Olsen, Kevin Yemoto, Ross Steward, Garrett Banks, Luke Stark, Ansley Brown and Dr. Allan Andales.”

The award will be formally presented in September in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Congratulations, Dr. Chávez!
