Program Certification (ABET)


Both the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering degrees at Colorado State University are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.


Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Mission

The department exists to educate and prepare undergraduate and graduate students to pursue exemplary careers in the electrical and computer engineering industries and academia and to generate new knowledge by the pursuit of research in selected areas of electrical and computer engineering.

Program Educational Objectives

The Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) for both Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering programs are statements describing what our students are expected to attain within a few years after graduation. The PEOs are periodically reviewed by program constituencies, including faculty, current undergraduate students in the program, alumni, and industry, to ensure that they remain consistent with the mission statements of the ECE Department, College of Engineering, and Colorado State University, the needs of program constituencies, and ABET criteria.

The ECE PEOs are designed and implemented around the following three principal attributes: mastery, innovation, and leadership:


Mastery

Graduates of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department will expertly solve engineering problems associated with their professional or educational positions by applying ECE fundamentals, both independently and in a team environment. They will demonstrate technical expertise in identifying, analyzing, formulating, and creating engineering solutions. Their skills and knowledge will reflect both depth and breadth of understanding, including multidisciplinary aspects, within global, societal, and environmental contexts.


Innovation

They will successfully demonstrate innovation and creativity in their professional practice or advanced education in engineering or other related fields. They will consider holistic and synergistic systems-oriented approaches in their studies, analyses, and designs. They will think strategically and apply their abilities, talents, and insights creatively and productively. They will create solutions that employ the most innovative approaches and current engineering practices, techniques, skills, and tools.


Leadership

They will be effective, influential, ethical, and inspirational leaders within their organizations and professions, contributing to the overall strength and well-being of society through service and engagement. Possessing an entrepreneurial spirit, they will demonstrate personal initiative, resourcefulness, and integrity. ECE graduates will engage in lifelong learning through advanced education/degrees, professional development, self-learning, and/or other career-appropriate training and educational opportunities. They will communicate effectively, in multiple formats, with their colleagues, professional clients, research collaborators, students, and the public.


Student Outcomes

Outcomes 1 through 7 are very similar for all majors in the College of Engineering, and a general statement of those outcomes is presented in the CSU General Catalog in the College of Engineering section. The student outcomes of the Electrical and Computer Engineering programs are as follows.


Statement of Student Outcomes

Graduates of the undergraduate electrical and computer engineering programs will have:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
