Preparing the Memo

A memo is an internal communication, within an institution, as opposed to a letter, which is an external communication.  Working professionals use memos to communicate their work to colleagues and supervisors.

Memos are brief, factual messages or summaries.  Successful memos are those that clearly present information, make unambiguous recommendations, or crisply specify needed action.

When you write memos in industry or even for a class here at Colorado State, know why you are writing and who is your audience.  This will help you determine what information to include and how to say it.  In EE102, the instructor will read your memos, but will not be the audience for the memo.  Your audience is a fellow engineer who is your supervisor and colleague at Banana Electronics.
