Case Study #5

Name Assigned: Apartment complex with surge damage

Address: Unknown

Coordinates: N 30d 23’ 56.8”/W 089d 02’38.4”

Structure Description: The Gulfport area apartment complex was built in 1978, and each complex was a four or six-plex. The East-West end wall was braced following conventional construction. There were no hold-downs, and there was only one piece of plywood sheathing at each end of the end walls. The remainder of the walls was filled with fiberboard. The photos show a stucco type finish that was finished to look like brick veneer. The metal stucco lath was stitched to the wall with staples in spots 5” oc x 12” oc.

Failure Description: It was not clear if damage was wind related or surge related. Ties from first floor to second floor appeared to be home-made straps, about 32” oc.

Additional Information: Surge was 6’ high, about 20 blocks from coast, 6” above the white car shown in the photos.
