Collection of Perishable Data on Woodframe Residential Structures in the Wake of Hurricane Katrina

Case Study #4

Name Assigned: Convenience store collapse

Address: Unknown

Coordinates: N 30d 29’55.1”/W 089d06’24.3”

Structure Description: Light frame wood structure with plan dimensions approximately 90’x45’. Metal cladding for both the wall and roof sheathing. Metal walls with 2x6 studs @ 16”, with 1x4 purlins @ 24” oc, wall purlins were 1x4 @ 24” oc.

Failure Description: Roof uplifted and there was a loss of roof sheathing. The front glass window “blew out”. After that, trusses collapsed. Trusses were tied to walls with H10 style clips. Overhang was 6’ overhang, no posts holding porch. Another alternate theory is awning contributed to the collapse. Once the metal cladding was lost, diaphragm action of the roof diaphragm was compromised.

Additional Information: Directly north of this structure, another metal clad wall was damaged, apparently from projectile debris from this roof collapse.
