Collection of Perishable Data on Woodframe Residential Structures in the Wake of Hurricane Katrina

Case Study #23

Name Assigned: Cypress Point Community

Coordinates: N30d26’59.2”/W089’08’15.3”

Structure Description: These houses were two stories and about 2400 sf. Estimated build time was 2000 – 2005. Homes appeared to be built to modern conventional construction. Vinyl siding was attached to OSB and foam board with ¾” long staples spaced at 12 – 18” oc. The few staples that were observed in the foam board were attached to framing beneath the celotex. The gable areas of the trusses were completely sheathed with foam board, after the fact at least one home owner completely sheathed his home in OSB. Bricks were also not adequately tied to the wood frame. The vinyl siding was stapled directly to the foam board, which does not follow manufacturers recommendations for typical vinyl siding.

Failure Description: In the area of the OSB, there were a lot of staples that remained in tact and pulled though the vinyl siding.

Additional Information: Winds were reported at 130 mph (by local).
Quotes from homeowners during discussions:

“(foam board) destroyed this neighborhood”
“Cannot believe building code would allow siding to be applied to foam sheathing”
