Case Study #2
Name Assigned: CMU Building loast 2nd roof Address: unknown Coordinates: N 30d46’ 57.8”/W 089d08’ 18.4” Structure Description: CMU building with flat roof. Roof was retrofitted with a light wood frame roof. The rafters were 2x4s. The 2x4s were spaced at intermittently ranging from 4’ in the perimeter (which see highest uplift forces) to 2’ oc in the center of the roof. On top of the 2x4 rafters were 2x4 flat-wise purlins at approximately 2’ oc. Light gage steel roofing was on top of the purlins. Failure Description: The steel roofing appeared to be adequately screwed to purlins, but purlins were not sufficiently attached to rafters. Each purlin/rafter connection was a double 10d nail. Additional Information: Directly West of this structure was a home built in the 1920s that sustained no damage. |
