Structure Description: Light commercial wood frame building. Approximately 75% of porch collapsed, and area representing 9’ wide by 60’ long. Height was 8’ at support beams and columns and 10’4” at building. The porch columns were toe-nailed into top of deck. The top of columns were toe-nailed into double 2x8 support beams. The 2x6 rafters were tied to the support beams with a light-weight hurricane tie. Some wood deterioration was detected in rafters as well as roof sheathing. Roof sheathing was 3-ply 15/32” southern pine plywood (APA Mill Number 377), plywood edge nailing was approximately 10”, field nailing was approximately 12” oc.. The porch cantilevered 2.5:1 over back span.

Failure Description: The large overhang appeared to experience uplift, when the porch uplifted, the toe-nails in the bottom of the column failed. Roof appeared to uplift

Additional Information: Directly south of this porch collapse was another, looked like identical contractors and building style. The porch uplifted and flipped over into the existing building roof.
