MECH324 - Homework Hints, Answers, and Extra Requirements

Homework 5 (Chapter 6)

TO ENHANCE YOUR LEARNING, PLEASE TRY TO WORK THE PROBLEMS FIRST WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE HINTS AND ANSWERS BELOW.

MAKE SURE YOU SATISFY ALL REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW AND IN THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM STATEMENTS (UNLESS INDICATED OTHERWISE BELOW).

NOTE - BECAUSE MOST ANSWERS ARE PROVIDED, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU SHOW ALL STEPS IN YOUR WORK.  THE GRADING WILL BE BASED ON THE COMPLETENESS, CLARITY, AND CORRECTNESS OF YOUR WORK, NOT JUST THE ANSWERS YOU PROVIDE.

6-1b
[10 pts]

  • Draw an appropriate vector diagram.
  • Solve for the compass angle analytically.

6-4a
[15 pts]

  • "velocity" means magnitude and direction
  • You do not need to determine the velocities of the instant centers.
  • Use the configuration shown ("open").

6-7a
[20 pts]

  • Still draw the linkage to scale.
  • Assume the linkage is in the "open" configuration.
  • "velocity" means magnitude and direction

6-12
[30 pts]

  • Clearly label every IC on a drawing of each linkage.
  • You are not required to locate I2,4 for 12f ... it has no useful meaning for this mechanism.

6-26
[25 pts]

  • Identify what configuration the linkage is in ("open" or "crossed").
  • Express everything in terms of the local coordinate system (x-y), where the x-axis goes from "O2" to "O4". Note - x'y' is the same as xy (but not XY) in the book.
