This may surprise you, but we don't recommend purchasing your own computer at all. This advice applies particularly to first-year students, especially those staying in the Academic Village residence hall Your student ID card will give you 24-hour access to the state-of-the-art computer labs that have all the software needed for your coursework. (Yes, you can check your email and watch videos on the computers, too.)

Most importantly, the thin clients provide world-wide access to all engineering software.

Many students find it more convenient to bring their own computer since it may be convenient to have a computer in class for note-taking.
