Mechanical Engineering Advisory Panel

The Mechanical Engineering Advisory Panel (MEAP) is the external ME Department advisory body. The MEAP consists of representatives from industry, research laboratories, alumni, and academia. It was formed in 1995, and meets twice a year in October and April. The MEAP provides advice and feedback to the department on undergraduate education issues. They review the objectives, outcomes, and overall assessment processes of the Department. Members of the MEAP are also active in the Senior Design Practicum, as speakers, judges, and consultants.

The department uses MEAP factors in its assessment process to measure student awareness of various engineering topics. Example MEAP factors are:

  1. The importance of alignment between the goals of an engineering project team and the goals of management in execution and ultimate success of an engineering project.
  2. Appreciation that engineering project work is done in a competitive environment requiring a balance among customer requirements, schedule constraints, cost and resource availability.
  3. Awareness that when producing a product or designing a new process, one must set goals that challenge the team to achieve significant improvements, create value, or achieve breakthroughs, i.e., if you can see how to meet your goals, they may be set too low.
