Strategic Plan

The college's strategic plan was initially developed in 2005 by creating a series of mini-plans. By developing a series of targeted mini-plans, the college's strategic plan becomes dynamic; it can be continually updated as we identify and develop new initiatives.

Development of a "decadal study" was an important activity during this initial planning period (Chapter 3). More than 60 faculty and staff and 40 external advisory board members contributed to this study. Individuals were asked to consider societal opportunities and challenges over the next few decades and the role of engineering and science educators and researchers in addressing them.

This strategic planning process has had many positive benefits:

  • Development and implementation of an international initiative that includes expanded study abroad programs, international internships, international service learning projects, new international curricula, and faculty development (Chapter 4F).
  • Creation of  a new living-learning community – the Academic Village. This facility is unique in the U.S. and was developed with participation from each of the four departments offering undergraduate engineering degrees (Chapter 4G).
  • Reorganization of student services to include a strong career component and better support for diversity initiatives (Chapter 8).
  • Long-range planning for facilities that includes the main campus, foothills campus, and other locations (Chapter 7C).
