Can't Send Email

All CSU email servers are configured to disallow relay of email messages that come from outside the CSU network. The main reason for this is to help stop the spread of "spam". You have two options to configure your email client to send messages when you are outside the CSU network.

Your first option is to set your outgoing SMTP server to your ISP's (Internet Service Provider) mail server. You will need to contact your ISP to see what email server to use.

Your second option is to use the Engineering mail server, which now accepts authenticated sending of email messages from outside of CSU. To set this up with your mail client do the following:

  • Set your outgoing STMP server to mail.engr.colostate.edu.
  • Next set the authentication on.
  • For authentication type set to TLS or STARTTLS.

Now when you send a message it will prompt your for your Engineering login and password. Once you enter that you will be able to send email from anywhere outside of CSU through the Engineering mail server.

Thunderbird specific instructions.

  1. If you are on campus, go to Tools, Accout Settings and in the left pane click Outgoing Server (SMTP), then edit the default server. Set the server to mail.engr.colostate.edu, set the Connection security to StartTLS, and uncheck "Use name and password." Then click OK to go back to the Account Settings screen.
  2. If you're not on campus or using the VPN, go to Tools, Accout Settings and in the left pane click Outgoing Server (SMTP), then edit the default server. Set the server to mail.engr.colostate.edu, set the Connection security to StartTLS, Then click OK to go back to the Account Settings screen.

If you have any further questions or need clarification, contact ENS.
