VPN Information
ENS recommends using the Engineering Open VPN service for your VPN needs. Select your operating system below for VPN configuration instructions.
What is a VPN?
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) that uses any Internet connection to provide remote or roaming users to a central organization's network. In our case, the VPN allows you to connect to the CSU Engineering network from your home or any other Internet connection, and allows your computer to act as if it were a part of the physical Engineering network. This allows you to access Engineering resources that you normally would have to be physically on campus to access.
Why OpenVPN?
ENS has researched several options for secure, remote access to the Engineering network resources, and believes OpenVPN is the best solution for these needs. For more information, see the OpenVPN website.
Our new, updated OpenVPN server allows Windows, Mac, and Linux users to create a split tunnel to the Engineering network. This means that only traffic destined for CSU will go through the SSL gateway. All other non-CSU traffic (such as to your home network, or the Internet) will go through your current network connection or ISP provider. This improves your network performance when your traffic doesn't have to take a roundabout way through CSU first before it gets to outside sites like Google, Yahoo or Youtube.
Why an Engineering OpenVPN? Why not use the CSU VPN?
While the Secure Gateway SSL VPN provided by ACNS is a fine tool, it does not cover all of the cases for our Engineering users. You are welcome to use the best tool for your situation; ENS simply wants to provide you with the most options for a VPN solution.
