ECE Department Head Overview

MaciejewskiHi, I'd like to welcome you to this video tour of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Colorado State University. My name is Tony Maciejewski and I'm the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In this DVD, you will listen to some of our faculty and students talk about their research and why they decided to study and work at Colorado State University. As you listen to their stories, you will hear a consistent message: ECE is home to world-class research being performed by world-class people. That's the reason I came to Colorado State University four years ago after spending 14 years on the faculty at Purdue University. And that's why I invite you to see why ECE at Colorado State is the best choice for your education.

The impact of our research is far-reaching. Our faculty's peer reviewed papers have been literally cited tens of thousands of times by other researches in academia and industry. These are people who are applying the new concepts and techniques that were discovered by faculty here at Colorado State University.

The ECE department at CSU ranks in the top 25 universities in the country in terms of faculty citations. Further evidence that our faculty are international recognized leaders is given by the large number of journal editorships, conference chairmanships, and Fellow awards from professional societies that our faculty hold. For example, out of 17 faculty members our department boasts 14 Fellow awards from societies such as the IEEE, Optical Society of America, Association for Computing Machinery, and the American Meteorological Society. Leading government agencies like the National Science Foundation and numerous industries are investing in our cutting-edge research efforts.

The amount of research funding we receive is significant not only because it's a metric of quality, but it also translates into dollars available to fund you as a research associate.

Throughout our recently renovated buildings, you'll find cutting-edge equipment like the CHILL radar and the nanometer scale resolution microscope that uses short wavelength lasers developed here at Colorado State. We take pride in utilizing the best tools available and we continually update our labs and equipment to accommodate the emerging programs and technological advancements. The ECE department is also a leader in the University-wide Information, Science, and Technology Center, or ISTeC, whose goal is to promote CSU's research, education, and outreach activities related to the design and innovative use of computers, communications, and information systems.

Our students come from all over the world. As an international student, you'll feel welcome from the moment you arrive in Fort Collins. CSU will assist you in finding accommodations and other arrangements to help you get settled. Whether you're from Colorado or from China, you'll feel a sense of community among students from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Finally, I'd like to spend some time talking to you about our location, because I think the surroundings play a great role in your overall well-being and quality of life. CSU's campus is located in the heart of Fort Collins, Colorado, just at the base of the Rocky Mountains and within close proximity to outstanding recreational opportunities. You can see the snow capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains from campus, and an hour's drive in every direction leads you to a bounty of backcountry options, including hiking, mountain biking, downhill and cross country skiing, or kayaking down the Poudre River. Fort Collins residents have access to all of the resources of Boulder and Denver, where you can attend major sporting events or concerts. Quality of life can't be beat. It's a clean, safe city for people of all ages, and a great place to raise a family. I know you'll feel at home here in Fort Collins -- but our students and faculty tell the real story. Listen to their clips and you'll hear the enthusiasm in their voices and you'll see that they're passionate about what they do. I think you'll understand what I mean when I say ECE is home to world-class research and world-class people performing that research, and I hope that you'll be inspired to contact us. I invite you to please visit our web site for additional information about our programs, or feel free to call or email me or one of the faculty members to explore the possibilities that our department has to offer. We look forward to hearing from you.
