Graduate Program Minimum Application Requirements and Information

Applications are prescreened by the department year round.  Should we recommend you for admission, your next step will be to complete an official application with the CSU Graduate School.
Application Deadlines:
For the Fall term: February 1
For the Spring term: September 1
Please refer to the minimum requirements listed below before proceeding with the preliminary screening. Only persons with bachelor's degrees from colleges or universities accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) are eligible to apply. Foreign students must hold degrees equivalent to U.S. bachelor's degrees, and should be among the top students in their classes.

Minimum Requirements

  • GPA - Applicants are required to have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale) for undergraduate work, and 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for previous graduate work.
If your institute uses any other scale, you must convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale. International Grade Conversion Tool
  • GRE - Verbal – 400; combined Verbal and Quantitative – 1100
  • GRE - Analytical Writing – 3.0
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET) degrees are not accepted.

International Students – Additional Requirements

  • TOEFL or IELTS Scores
For students with degrees from institutions where the primary language of instruction is not English, a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the written exam, or 79-90 on the iBT, or a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 is required.
Scores must be submitted directly from ETS to Colorado State University.  The university code is 4075.  For more information go to http://www.ets.org/toefl.
  • Certified Proof of Financial Support (GS3F Form)
An I-20 will not be issued until proof of adequate financial support has been provided to the University, however this information is not required during the application process.  You may wait to send proof of financial support after you receive an offer of admission. The number of students who can be supported by the department (including by RA and TA positions) during any given semester is limited, and competition for these positions is intense. The financial support must cover all required expenses as specified in the Estimate of Expenses for International Students.

Please note: The department cannot accommodate all applicants who meet minimum requirements for admission and reserves the right to select individuals for admission on the basis of merit and to maximize the potential for individual accomplishments.

Required Preliminary Application Screening

Our department will evaluate your eligibility for admission at no cost to you.

  1. Apply for a preliminary screening
  2. Do not mail documents at this time. Original documents are requested only if you have been recommended for admission to the program.
