The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has awarded Drs. Sandra G. Biedron and Stephen Milton and their graduate students, Jonathan Edelen and Ted Burleson, a 5-year, $2 million research grant for science and technology in directed energy, including accelerator engineering.
The grant for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will focus on complex accelerator magnets, novel electron sources, neural network based control systems, and electron beam instabilities. The ONR award bolsters several ongoing directed energy programs at Colorado State University led by Drs. Sandra Biedron, Carmen Menoni, and Stephen Milton through the Office of Naval Research, the Office of Secretary of Defense's High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office, and the Boeing Company.
Drs. Anthony Maciejewski, Jorge Rocca, and William Fawley will also serve as key contributors to the ONR project. External collaborators in the area of directed energy supporting the ONR include the Naval Postgraduate School, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory, and the Australian Synchrotron.
Biedron, the principal investigator, has been supporting the ONR since 2002. In 2010 she was awarded a Letter of Commendation from the Chief of Naval Research for her outstanding efforts.
