Advances in High Damage Threshold Ion Beam Sputtered Films for Use in the Near Infra-Red (IR)

Abstract: We have investigated the role of defects in the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of amorphous Sc2O3 and HfO2 thin film layers grown
using ion beam deposition. The LIDT studies were conducted in different pulse regimes, ranging from nanosecond to femtosecond pulsewidths. A
critical dependence on deposition process parameters is detailed. Early onset damage mechanisms will be discussed and results of our material studies as well as the damage performance of our films will be presented. The role of post-deposition processing in the improvement of damage threshold values will also be discussed.
