Attenuation Statistics for X-Band Radar Network Design

Abstract: Weather radars that operate at X-band (8-12GHz) experience greater attenuation as opposed to S-band radars (2-4 GHz) in the presence of rain. It is important for X-band radar designers to know how much attenuation the radar signal will suffer when propagating through storms. Since there aren’t many X-band radars in operation today and therefore not much X-band radar data available to obtain the attenuation statistics, a methodology was developed to obtain the X-band attenuation using S-band dual polarization radar measurements of rain. The attenuation statistics for X-band radar were obtained using data collected by the Colorado State University CHILL Radar and the KOUN Radar in Norman, OK. The results in this thesis present statistics regarding the amount of attenuation that X-band radars will encounter, either individually or networked. The study of joint attenuation statistics for multiple radars is presented using the Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere X-band radar network.
