CO-AMP Boosts Numbers of Students of Color in Engineering

Engineering student Jennifer Davis knew her grandfather was proud as he looked at her grades, but his praise still stung.

"Good for you," he said. "Those are man classes."

Davis, a Colorado State University graduate student, believes cultural sentiments about the roles of women and minorities discourage them from studying math and science. Even within her Latino family, she has had to fight the bias.

Senior Design

Civil and Environmental Engineering's two-semester Senior Design course is the capstone course where students draw upon their four years of technical skill development to design and complete an engineering project. In the first semester, students learn about proposal writing after which they are divided into teams and assigned a real project for a real client. At the end of the first semester, each team makes a presentation of their proposal to the class and clients. During the second semester, each team refines its plan based on client comments, and tackles the project work.
