Computer Programmer – Research Associate

This position will support the development and implementation of the Object Modeling System (OMS) by providing feature requests and requirements to OMS developers and working with users in making specific application OMS to their problem set.  The incumbent should be located in the Fort Collins Colorado in order to work closely with OMS developers and other modeling specialists located in Fort Collins.

 

Major Duties

 

Support the further improvement of the Object Modeling System (OMS) that is being developed between Colorado State University and the Natural Resource Conservation Service NRCS. NRCS and CSU have implemented this modeling framework for Agricultural System model development and application. The incumbent will provide expertise to further develop and enhance OMS for model applications and will help with the following:

  • Support the implementation of geospatial libraries and visualization tools for OMS and OMS model applications.
  • Support the implementation of OMS modeling web services in cloud computing environments.
  • Support the migration from commercial to open source tools for geospatial processing and  visualization for NRCS field office software

 

The incumbent will work as part of a project with collaborators from multiple universities, US Geological Survey, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

 

Education and Position Requirements

·       Minimum of B.S. with strong research emphasis in Computer Science.

·       Must have knowledge with Java application development/build tools, IDEs and Version Control Systems.

·       Must have knowledge in Geotools open source technology and general GIS development experience.

·       Must have knowledge in NASA’s open source World Wind technology, specifically in  Worldwind geospatial visualization.

·       Proficiency and demonstrated the use of Java for desktop and web-service model applications. (Background in simulation model development in hydrology and water management, or Agricultural systems simulation models or natural resource applications.)

·       Proficiency with the Java core APIs such as for UI development, remote access, and data management.

·       Ability to prioritize and multi-task and communicate and interact well with others within a team-oriented atmosphere.  Adept in providing alternatives in application systems development or problem solving.
