Graduate Students Receive Hydro Fellowships

Andre Dozier and Brian Campbell each received a fellowship from the Hydro Research Foundation to perform research hydropower. Both Andre and Brian come to CSU as experienced civil engineers.

Andre has experience aiding water resources engineers in quantifying and developing water rights, designing preliminary irrigation plans along with other agricultural developments, and modeling reservoir operations using climate varying scenarios. Brian has worked primarily in roadway design and land development.

Andre's research focuses on realizing the full potential of hydropower for the provision of grid services by developing an integrated water and power network simulation routine within MODSIM, which was developed here at Colorado State University.

The goal of Brian's study is to (a) identify a small number of site categories which represent a substantial potential for hydropower, (b) develop a high-level, standardized design for each category, by identifying and parameterizing a finite number of controlling site variables, (c) classifying or selecting applicable technologies, (d) modeling costs sensitivity for each parameter. This project is unique in that it is directed specifically at an un-exploited hydropower resource – small sources in irrigation systems – and applies a systems approach to reduce capital costs of micro hydropower development through the standardization of the engineering process. He is working with Professos Dan Zimmerle and Neil Grigg.

IAEF Announces Essay Contest Winners

The Irrigation Association Education Foundation has announced the winners of its seventh annual essay and video contest:

  • Essay, Turf/Landscape: William Connor, University of Hawaii at Manoa
  • Essay, Agriculture: Kendall DeJonge, Colorado State University
  • Video: Arlen McCluskey and Nancy Niklis, University of Hawaii at Manoa

Winners composed entries on the theme "The Role of Irrigation in Sustainability." Winners and their faculty advisors will receive all-expenses-paid trips to the 2010 Irrigation Show. At the show, students will attend education classes and network with industry leaders.
