Undergraduate Scholarships

The College of Engineering has an extensive scholarship program and in combination with its engineering departments, offers approximately 160 scholarships per year to undergraduate students, worth more than $340,000. This represents about 10% of the student population. The scholarships are annual or renewable awards. Renewable scholarships range from $2,500 to $5,000 per year. Annual scholarships range from $500 to $4,000 per year. College of Engineering scholarships can be combined with University scholarships.

Freshmen who have been accepted into an engineering major are automatically considered for all available scholarships administered by the College of Engineering for which they meet the requirements as specified by the sponsor. There is no need to fill out a scholarship application form for scholarships administered by the College of Engineering. Information provided as part of the CSU admissions application is used to make the selection. In the process of selecting freshmen recipients, the scholarship committee looks at the strength of the academic high school record (courses completed, cumulative GPA and class rank) and results from the standardized tests (SAT and/or ACT). Freshmen scholarship offers are mailed in early March. Other scholarship programs may require a scholarship application.

Returning and transfer students who do not already have a renewable college/departmental scholarship can apply for annual scholarships during the months of January and February, to be awarded for the following academic year. The College of Engineering has a large number of merit-based scholarships, which typically are in the range of $1000 to $4000. Academic performance at Colorado State and involvement in extracurricular activities are important criteria used in awarding these scholarships. From December 1st until the March 1st submission deadline, undergraduate students fill out the online CSU Scholarship Application (CSUSA) located on RamWeb. The criteria for each scholarship is specified by the sponsor. Students need to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in order to be considered for scholarships, and while receiving the scholarship need to carry at least 14 credits per semester leading toward a degree in engineering.

How can I be considered for a Scholarship?

Students who apply to the College of Engineering may find scholarship opportunities in one of four places.

  • External Scholarships - There are many organizations outside of Colorado State which offer external scholarships. Contact your high school counselor to learn more about these opportunities. Most high schools have a list of web sites that will allow you to screen for scholarships directed toward specific majors and/or specific groups of students.
  • University Scholarships - CSU Student Financial Services offers university scholarships to qualified entering students, regardless of major. Some are one-year scholarships while others are renewable up to a total of four years, provided the student performs at some specified minimum level and carries a full class load. Because of the higher admission standards in the College of Engineering, many of engineering students are offered such renewable scholarships. University scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis among qualified students. It is therefore important to apply early for admission.
  • College Scholarships - The College of Engineering offers scholarships to qualified students. Some of these scholarships are for just one year (typically $1000), while others are renewable up to a total of four years, provided the student maintains at least a grade point average of 3.0 or higher (depending on the scholarship) and registers for at least 14 credits per semester counting toward an engineering degree.
  • Department Scholarships - Some departments have one-year and/or renewable scholarships similar to the ones offered by the College of Engineering.
