Open Positions in the College of Engineering

The College of Engineering at Colorado State University has a world-class reputation, top-rated faculty, distinguished research programs, and an outstanding group of undergraduate and graduate students. The college is comprised of five departments, each with a long-standing tradition of excellence in research, education, and outreach.

Building on a strong tradition (see video), we strive to attract faculty and students who excel at delivering innovative academic and research programs. CSU research grants hit a record $267.4 million in fiscal year 2006, up 10 percent from the previous year. This places CSU among the top few institutions in the U.S. for universities without a medical school.

College of Engineering faculty members are important contributors to CSU’s research enterprise and are extraordinarily productive. The College of Engineering, with 9% of CSU’s faculty, is responsible for about 20% of CSU’s research expenditures. Each faculty member, on average, generates $540,000 in research expenditures annually; much of this funding supports students. In addition, if we consider our faculty’s ability to obtain highly competitive federal funding, CSU’s faculty garner about $430,000 per year, compared to $370,000 per year at institutions ranked in the top 20 nationally.

The College of Engineering is home to about one third of Colorado State University’s "Programs of Research and Scholarly Excellence," a special designation recognizing the excellence of our Department of Atmospheric Science, Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory (Mechanical Engineering), Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Programs (Civil Engineering), Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Science and Technology (Electrical and Computer Engineering), and our interdisciplinary Musculoskeletal Research program. In addition, engineering faculty participate in two NSF Engineering Research Centers (ERC’s) and a new NSF Science Technology Center.

Colorado State leads the National Science Foundation Extreme Ultraviolet Science and Technology Engineering Research Center, as well as the Science and Technology Center for Multi-scale Modeling of Atmospheric Processes. CSU is a participating institution in the Engineering Research Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere. To read more about these centers and some of our other research programs, see our Research Angle publication.

Colorado State University admitted 4,093 freshmen this fall, the largest freshman class ever at the university. The ratio of students to faculty within the College of Engineering is 15/1 at the undergraduate level and 6/1 at the graduate level. The College administers seven undergraduate engineering programs: chemical and biological engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, and engineering science, which includes concentrations in space, international engineering, and teacher education, as well as multiple interdisciplinary options and certificates such as biomedical engineering.

Each department in the College of Engineering administers M.S., M.E. (Masters of Engineering), and Ph.D. degrees. Graduate enrollments are closely tied to our research programs. The College has experienced a 50% increase in research expenditures since 2001. This has resulted in enrollment growth at the graduate level as well.

New faculty will join a strong group of committed and entrepreneurial faculty in an environment that fosters interdisciplinary academic and research programs. In addition, Fort Collins is home to CSU, a community named "Best Place to Live in America for 2006". With access to the Rocky Mountains and extraordinary recreational activities, Fort Collins also has a strong art community and is within an hour of Denver. The Poudre School District is one of the strongest in the State of Colorado, providing elementary, junior high and high school students with excellent educational opportunities.

We continue to hire world-class faculty, enhance our teaching and research facilities, and build upon our strengths to establish the foundation for new initiatives. These new initiatives are described in our strategic plan.

Colorado State University is investing in the College of Engineering with the addition of 20 new faculty lines during the period from 2006 through 2010. During the 2006/2007 academic year, we are conducting multiple faculty and department head searches. Application information, deadlines, and additional details are provided below.
